empowHER kickoff:
Suzy Merchant and Allison Schmitt

Program kickoff

MSU Women's Basketball Coach Suzy Merchant will welcome girls and their parents to the second annual empowHER Leadership Retreat. She'll share inspiring words with participants, explain how and why the retreat was developed, and she'll introduce everyone to Olympic medalist Allison Schmitt.

Allison has been very candid about her struggle with depression and the importance of mental health in everyone, especially athletes. She is the cousin of April Bocian, the basketball player in whose memory empowHER was created.

Allison Schmitt of Canton, Michigan, is a three-time Olympian with eight medals in swimming. She's also on "team chocolate milk" for the United Dairy Industry of Michigan.
In the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, Allison won a bronze medal as a member of the 4×200-meter freestyle relay. At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, she won five medals, three of them gold, in the 200-meter freestyle, in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay, and in the 4×100-meter medley relay. She also won a silver medal in the 400-meter freestyle and a bronze medal in the 4 × 100-meter freestyle relay.
